An enterprise project I reported exploring the intersection of transportation and health care access in low-income unincorporated communities near the Salton Sea. Residents in these small communities frequently lack access to reliable personal transportation and rely on public transportation for their health care needs.

A follow-up article I wrote on a local theft in Cathedral City. Thieves ransacked a local little league’s equipment shed and made off with 80 percent of the league’s equipment. Community members stepped in immediately to pledge donations, including the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, who offered to replace all of the stolen equipment.

A local interest feature I wrote on Sheriff’s Deputy Alicia Lopez and the Castleberry family. Lopez donated her kidney to 3-year-old Matthew, the son of a former sheriff’s department co-worker, after years of struggling with posterior urethral valves and other health conditions.
